Topic: Flee

Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that you sanctify my spirit, soul and body as I read your word in Jesus name.

Scripture: Genesis 39:1‐23

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?

If yesterday’s account of Judah was bad news and a serious warning, today’s return to the story of Joseph is good news with important lessons to treasure. Joseph, the slave boy, had prospered in Egypt because “the Lord was with him” (v.2). How many times in today’s passage can you identify this phrase? It is common for people who prosper to forget God and live carelessly, but Joseph proved himself different.

In yesterday’s passage, Judah looked for sin; in today’s, we must learn that sin can look for us in the form of diverse temptations. For young, virile Joseph, it was a temptation of sexual sin. Notice how desperate Potiphar’s wife was (vs.7,10, 11‐12) and Joseph’s basis of refusal (v.9b). Whether we go out to look for sin or sin comes pursuing us, there is only one remedy: we must flee. See 1 Corinthians 6:18‐20; 3:16‐17.

For the second time, Joseph’s coat or cloak was used to lie against him (vs.13‐15). In both cases, Joseph ended up in unpleasant circumstances. Obedience to the Lord can sometimes land us in troubled waters. It landed Joseph in prison. However, even there, God was with him and is using all these to prepare him for the future.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Pray for grace to overcome every temptation that comes your way.
