Scripture Union SU Daily Guide | Message

Everyone was involved in the great work of rebuilding the wall and everybody’s work was equally important and rightly acknowledged. Some, however, were laying extra, unacceptable burdens on their fellow builders! Notice the three specific problem areas outlined in vs.2-5. Do we sometimes see similar problems among the people of God in our Christian communities? Notice the good example set by Nehemiah in vs.14-18. Nehemiah said he did not what the former governors did because of the fear of God (v. 15).

He refused to lord it over his people even denying himself his normal entitlement as the governor knowing that this will place heavy burden on the poor people. What a lesson, especially for those in leadership position in the nation as well as in the church. How many members of our churches are groaning under the heavy load of forced payment of tithes and offerings to feed the leaders’ insatiable lusts? See who Nehemiah looked up for his reward in v.19 cf. 1 Cor. 15: 58; Gal. 6: 9; Heb. 6: 10.

Since Nehemiah has no skeleton in his cupboard, nor hid it in his brother or wife’s bank account, he was free to confront the nobles and leaders who were oppressing the poor people (vs.6-11). They all agreed to discontinue their evil action. Only leaders who demonstrate their own integrity have the credibility to confront and rebuke evil in the society.

Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Pray that Christian civil and political leaders in your country may live out their faith and bring changes to the nation.
• Pray for the educational needs of the children of missionaries

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
2 Chron. 10-12; Luke 6:27-49
