SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE 5TH AUGUST 2022 DEVOTIONAL

Topic: Remain True

Opening Prayer: Grant me grace dear Lord to apply what you will teach me today as I read this passage.

Scripture: Revelation 2:12‐17

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?

Pergamum, described as Satan’s headquarters, was centre for Greek culture and education. It was an idol‐worshipping city that attracted cult medical tourists. Their deep satanic worship led to the severe persecution of the believers. But the church in Pergamum is commended for two important testimonies (v.13). We can trust the Lord to help us remain true to Him in time of distress. Today, we are surrounded not only by occultism and satanic worship but also by personal idols of greed, materialism, and pleasure.

Some of these constitute the thorns in Jesus’ parable of the sower that choke the Word, preventing us from bearing fruit. Despite praise for their faithfulness during persecution, notice the “few things” that the Lord has against this church (vs.14‐16). Secretly, some of the members tolerated immorality, corruption, and false doctrine; thus drawing people away from God. No one is without a few blemishes that need correction (v.16). The Lord chastises those he loves (Hebrews 12:6).

In humility and repentance, we need to pray Psalm 139:23,24. Moabite king, Balak, for fear of the Israelite camping so close to them, enticed the prophet Balaam to curse them (Numbers 22‐24); but when that failed, they tempted the Israelites into immorality and idol worship, making them incur the wrath of God (See Numbers 25:1‐9). Every congregation must watch out against doctrines that appear harmless, but which compromise true faith in Jesus.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Pray for your church, that the Lord would reveal any sin being tolerated and bring revival and spiritual awakening.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
Deuteronomy 31:8; Isaiah 34‐36
