TODAY’S TOPIC: SPIRITUAL BOOMERANG

TEXT: Psalm 18:20-26
20. The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.

21. For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.

22. For all his judgments were before me, and I did not put away his statutes from me.

23. I was also upright before him, and I kept myself from mine iniquity.

24. Therefore hath the LORD recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight.

25. With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright;

26. With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself froward.

KEY VERSE: “With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself froward.” – (Psalm 18:26)

MESSAGE – DCLM Daily Manna 8 March 2020 Devotional :

Indigenous Australians usually kit themselves with a boomerang, a curved flat wood, when they go hunting. Although also used for sport and entertainment, the device is a historical weapon primarily designed to hunt animals. Thrown with a high spin, the boomerang flies in a curved rather than a straight line. Its long reach and stability are strategic characteristics which other primal hunting weapons did not possess. When it is correctly handled, the tool returns to its starting point. That is its chief quality: the ability to return to its sender.

At a higher spiritual dispensation, the passage under consideration expresses the basic principles that should guide man’s relationship with the Lord. “With the pure thou (God) wilt shew thyself pure; and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself froward”. You get from God what you give to Him. It is a case of reaping what you sow. The boomerang flies back at its sender, not with the intention of hurting him, but simply to report that it is not lost in transit. DCLM Daily Manna 8 March 2020 Devotional

A confident David, at the tail end of his life, announces that by and large, he has received mercy from the Lord to live uprightly. God has washed him of all his unrighteousness. He has received divine impartation of justification. Now he possesses a pure heart to serve God. As a result of sending purity of service to God, he is expecting purity of judgment from Him.

God’s position is not a complex matter defying understanding. Nor is it a hopeless situation for the sinner who might think his case is closed, because the Lord says He will be “froward” with the “froward”. Only the sinner who dies in sin has his book shut for mercy. This is a clarion call for sinners and backsliders to return to the Lord in penitence while believers should constantly watch and not depart from the narrow path.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Beware of what you throw at heaven; it is coming back to you!

THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Numbers 5-7
