Today’s Topic: Underneath the Mess

Scripture: And the dead man came out, his hands and feet bound in graveclothes, his face wrapped in a headcloth. Jesus told them, “Unwrap him and let him go!” John 11:44, NLT

Today’s Word
In John 11, four days after Lazarus had died, Jesus shouted, “Lazarus, come out of the tomb!” and Lazarus came forth alive, a great miracle. Then Jesus told the people standing there to unwrap him and set him free. They had to be incredibly dedicated to be willing to endure all it took to remove the strips of linen cloth wound around his limbs. The smell would have been almost unbearable, with every layer they unwrapped dirtier and smellier.

Only Jesus can forgive and give someone new life, but God has called us to help remove the messy graveclothes that cling to them. They still have issues—addictions, bitterness, jealousy, and they compromise. They have a long way to go. But underneath the mess, there’s a free person, a clean person, a forgiven person, an exceptional person.

They just need someone who won’t be put off by the outside. When you speak words of life to them, chains break. When you show love, strongholds come down. When you’re merciful, compassionate, and kind, you pour oil on their wounds. Be a healer, a lifter, a restorer.

Prayer For Today
“Father, thank You for freely giving me Your grace and mercy that I might freely give it to others. Thank You that I can help to lift the fallen, to restore the broken, and to heal the hurting. Help me be willing to get dirty and love people who are messy. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

TODAY’S INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE: Sometimes, we’re too concerned about what people think. “What will they say? Will they have a good opinion of me?” We’re spending all this time and energy trying to perform for people, win people over, make a good impression, hoping they’ll validate us. We’re getting our approval from the wrong place. It was never meant to come from people, but from God. When you’re secure in who He made you, you know you’re valuable, talented, attractive, a masterpiece, then you don’t have to have all the outside validation.

David said in Psalm 119, “God, keep me from lying to myself.” That’s a powerful prayer. “God, help me to be honest with myself. Help me to look in the mirror and see where my soul is not healthy, where I need to change. Where do I need to forgive, be more kind and understanding? Where do I need to quit letting people take my joy? Where do I need to get over what happened three years ago?

Where do I need to quit beating myself up, to see myself as valuable, a masterpiece?” My prayer is, “God, don’t let us go through life lying to ourselves.” It’s one thing to be dishonest with others, that’s certainly not good, but don’t lie to yourself. Don’t sweep things under the rug, make excuses for why you’re angry, bitter, jealous, hard to get along with. There’s no fault in being there, but there is a fault in staying there. It may be your explanation, but don’t let it be your excuse.
