MFM DAILY DEVOTIONAL FOR THURSDAY 4TH NOVEMBER 2021

TOPIC: THE SLUMBERING SPIRIT

Fire Scripture: Matthew 26:36-46

MFM Devotional 4 November 2021 | Thursday Message

Slumbering is sleeping. The disciples of Jesus fell into sleep when they needed to pray. A lot of Christians today are sleeping at the battlefront. Jesus was on His way to the cross and needed their support in prayers, but they disappointed Him. It is a dangerous thing to engage in physical slumber, but it is more dangerous to slumber spiritually.

John 4:24 tells us the importance of being spiritually awake. God is a Spirit and those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth. How do we relate to God who neither slumbers nor sleeps when our spirit is slumbering? For us to be in tune with God, our spirit must be awake (Psalm 121:3-4). The spiritual realm is a battleground where battles go on ceaselessly.

Proverbs 6:4 warns us that we must not sleep nor slumber if we want to deliver ourselves from the wickedness of the fowler. 2 Timothy 2:4 calls Christians chosen soldiers of the Lord and advises us not to engage in worldliness which can put us to sleep or slumber. Slumbering can also manifest in the form of spiritual carelessness, prayerlessness, disobedience to the word of God as well as lack of thirst and hunger for the word of God.

MOUNTAIN TOP LIFE DAILY DEVOTIONAL BY DR D.K OLUKOYA

Jesus illustrated this fact with the Parable of the Ten Virgins. The five wise virgins had oil in their lamps while the other five foolish virgins, who had no oil, went into slumber instead of looking for oil (Matthew 25:1-13). Most of the battles and problems we fight as Christians come into our lives when we are spiritually asleep.

This is aptly illustrated by the Parable of the Tares (Matthew 13:24-30). Jesus said while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. A slumbering spirit is weak. A slumbering spirit has no resistance against the attack of evil spirits. We need to wake up from our slumber by reviving our prayer lives, Bible reading, fasting and obedience to the word of God. In Romans 12:11, the Bible admonishes us not to be slothful in business, but we should be fervent in spirit and serve God with increasing enthusiasm. Heed this counsel. It pays!

Memory Verse:
Psalm 121: 3-4 – “He will not suffer thy foot to be moved. He that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.”

Motivational Quote:
Every defeat starts with a slumbering spirit, which has no defence.

Prophetic Word:
Every evil power assigned to induce you to slumber in order to destroy you shall die by fire, in the name of Jesus.

MFM Daily Devotional 4th November 2021 Thursday | HYMN
  • Awake, My Soul, and With The Sun

1. Awake, my soul, and with the sun
Thy daily stage of duty run;
Shake off dull sloth, and joyful rise,
To pay thy morning sacrifice.

2. All praise to Thee, who safe has kept,
And hast refreshed me whilst I slept.
Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake,
I may of endless life partake

3. Lord, I my vows to Thee renew;
Disperse my sins as morning dew;
Guard my first springs of thought and will,
And with Thyself my spirit fill.

4. Direct, control, suggest, this day,
All I design, or do, or say,
That all my powers, with all their might,
In Thy sole glory may unite.

5. Redeem Thy misspent moments past,
And live this day as if thy last;
Thy talents to improve take care;
For the great day thyself prepare.
