TOPIC: REJECT THE WAY OF FOLLY

Fire Scripture: Matthew 7:24-27

MFM Devotional for 19 July 2022 Tuesday Outline

Folly is another word for foolishness. It is the lack of wisdom. The Scriptures say that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. However, the fool says there is no God (Psalm 14:1). A fool is corrupt, loves sin and does things that are abominable and ungodly. Also, a fool lacks proper fear or respect for God, often goes in the wrong direction in life, does not tremble at God’s word and opposes instead scoffs at His commands.

A fool is wise in his own eyes and believes he is self-sufficient. A fool pontificates about everything and thinks that he or she knows it all. Human folly is seen in rebellion against God, ignoring His way and will, failure to understand Him as well as moral and spiritual irresponsibility. The Bible admonishes us to reject the way of folly and the company of fools. When we heed this admonition, we will fulfil our divine destinies.

The Bible also provides copious examples of the demonstration of human folly and the painful consequences experienced by those who chose to be foolish. Numbers 12:1-15 reveals that Miriam and Aaron (Moses’ siblings) spoke against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman he had married. God became angry with the two of them and Miriam became a leper. Moses had to cry to God to heal her.

In 1 Samuel 13, Saul acted foolishly by offering an unlawful sacrifice to God when he should have waited for Samuel, the right person to offer it. Prophet Samuel told King Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God” (1 Samuel 13:13). The consequence was that Saul lost his throne and kingdom. Similarly, when David mistakenly numbered the people and God sent plagues against the land.

He cried to God for forgiveness, saying, “l have done foolishly” (2 Samuel 24:10). Jesus taught about the difference between wisdom and folly (Matthew 7:24-27; Matthew 25:1-3). We should not be like the foolish builder or the foolish virgins. Beloved, to reject folly and embrace
