OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, I pray that you order my steps today through your word as I meditate on it.

Notice how Paul described the church in v.15. To say that the church is the pillar and foundation of the truth means that the church is the custodian of God’s truth and thus should set example of what is right by her systems, ethos, and practices. For this to happen, leaders in the church must be different from those of the world. What then does it take to be a leader in the Church or in any Christian organisation (vs.2-12)? As you ponder over the list, take note of the ones in which you are deficient and prayerfully work on them.
How we manage our households is usually a reflection of how we are likely to manage God’s household (vs.5-6,12; see also Titus 1: 6). In that sense, the qualities of a deacon or an overseer are primarily the qualities of a Christian parent.
Why is it not advisable to give too much responsibility to a new convert (v.6; cf. Acts 1:21-22)? Think through other reasons why leaders should also have a good reputation with those outside the Church (v.7). It is when our light can shine within and outside the household of God that His name will be gloried (Matthew 5:16).
