Scripture Union Daily Guide 11 September 2024 Outline
In today’s passage, Stephen highlights Moses’ call and commission by God, his task of delivering the Israelites from Egypt, his Messianic message, and the rejection of his message by the Israelites.
* The call and commission of Moses by God (vs.30-34): So, Moses was in the palace for 40 years (v.23), and in Midian for 40 years (v.30) and would later lead the Israelites through the wilderness for 40 years (v.36). It takes time for God to prepare and mould His servants; and this calls for patience and submission on the part of the servant. In what ways could the Lord be preparing you for the ministry ahead?
* Delivering the Israelites from Egypt (vs.35-36): although earlier rejected as a leader, he now bears a stamp of approval “by God Himself.” What is the significance of the reference to the plagues as well as the crossing of the Red Sea?
* Moses’ Messianic message (vs.37-38): Stephen reminds his listeners that Moses anticipated “a prophet like him”, a reference to Jesus Christ (see Deuteronomy 18:15), for whose account he is being put to trial.
* Rejection of his message by the Israelites (vs.39-43): Notice how skilfully Stephen points to the Israelites refusal and rejection of Moses, and a return of their hearts to Egypt! If there were people who had ‘blasphemed’ Moses, then it is not Stephen, but the Israelites themselves! Just as they rejected the Prophet predicted by Moses (v.37).
* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
