Opening Prayer: My dear heavenly Father, as I study your word, let it be a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
SCRIPTURE: JOHN 5:1-18
Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 14 January 2024
Consider the hopeless situation of the cripple. He appears to have resigned to his fate, “I can’t be healed; there is no helper” (vs.6-7). Jesus often acted upon a person’s faith or that of a close relation or friend. However, this man neither knew Jesus, nor His ministry or power. He neither solicited Christ’s help nor acted on His instructions until he was healed. The story is that of complete mercy (v.6).
Jesus’ concern was for the welfare of this oppressed man, but the Jewish leaders cared only about legality, a constant source of disagreement between them and Jesus. Maybe the leaders knew the crippled man. Instead of congratulating him, they condemned him for “breaking” the law. Do we also major on rules and regulations rather than showing concern for the welfare of the oppressed?
How would you compare Jesus’ action in v.13 with today’s miracle workers? Thank God for His Spirit who continues to minister to us privately and at a deeper level (v.14).
Practice/Word Application
Reflection: For with God nothing will be impossible.

Great is Thy faithfulness
1. Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be.
Refrain
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Great is Thy faithfulness!
Morning by morning new mercies I see.
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided;
Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!
2. Summer and winter and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.
3. Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow
, Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!
Closing Prayer
Use Lamentations 3:22-23 as a prayer focus for today.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Deuteronomy 1:11
“(The LORD God of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as he hath promised you!)”
