Paul hopes to be released from prison. But the judge’s decision could lead to his death. However, since the mission Christ assigned him was the only passion of his life, he wins in either case – whether released from prison or executed for preaching the gospel.

The threat of death could not affect Paul’s joy (v.23). Believers should not be held in fear of death because for them, death leads directly into the presence of Christ. So, what did he choose and why? (See vs.25-26.) He chose what was more necessary and would promote God’s Kingdom work and not what was convenient for his personal comfort.

However, what is extremely important for Paul is for the Christians to live ‘in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ’ or ‘as citizens of heaven’ and to be united in one purpose. This remains an important challenge for Christians and churches in Africa and elsewhere. Do people see Christ in the conduct and business practices of Christians in your community and country? Are they regarded as “salt and light” and godly examples?
Paul suggests to the believers that Christian suffering is inevitable! It is something Christians must go through (see 2 Timothy 3:12). So, believers are encouraged to find joy even when going through suffering (see John 15:18-20; 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
