Scripture Union Daily Guide 16 September 2025 Outline

Job was in pain, despair, and depression. He had lost all his wealth and children in one day (Job 1:13-19) and was at this point sick. He was in anguish and was challenging God to prove him guilty. How would you have talked with someone like Job? Instead of offering words of comfort to Job, what did Eliphaz do? Eliphaz accused Job of empty talks, prayerlessness (Job 15:2-4), having a wicked heart (Job 15:5-6) and being arrogant and foolish for questioning God’s justice (Job 15:7-12). Eliphaz subscribed to a common belief that suffering is always a consequence of personal sin, hence concluding that Job was suffering for his sins (Job 15:17-34).

However, this assumption fails to account for the intricacy of human suffering and the mysteries of God’s ways. In what ways do we fall into the error of Eliphaz today? When interacting with those who are suffering, we must learn to do so with humility and empathy. Instead of rushing to conclusions and judgment or offering simplistic explanations, it is important to listen, empathize, and support them without assuming the cause of their suffering. If we cannot help people, we should not add to their pain by accusing them of sins based on misconceptions.

And So
Not all sufferings are caused by personal sins. “Do not judge, or you too will be judged” (Matthew 7:1-2).
