Scripture Union Daily Guide 16th July 2024 Outline
There are things that last for eternity and those that are transient. Unfortunately, our values are often lopsided. We pursue temporary things vigorously at the expense of the spiritual and eternal blessings. Read vs.11-12 again and identify the things Paul recommends we should run after.
These are the virtues that can help us build a just and equitable society. But holding on to our salvation and godly virtues, in this perverse generation, is not always easy. We must be ready to fight, and to always guard our salvation and faith (vs.12, 20a). We must make up our minds to keep the commands of Christ our Lord till He returns (vs.14-15a), and turn away from godless doctrines and practices, no matter how appealing (vs.20-21). Meditate on vs.15b-16.
Ephesus was a wealthy city, and the church probably had many rich members hence Paul’s charge in vs.17-19 again re-emphasising the lessons we learnt yesterday. Jesus himself knew how much distraction money could create for the Christian and therefore taught a lot about money (wealth). See Matthew 13:22; 19:23-24; Luke 12:13-21. What did Jesus mean by being “rich towards God” and Paul, being “rich in good deeds” (v.18)?
Practice/Word Application
Thought: “Riches are a blessing only to those who make them a blessing to others.”
