Today’s Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 17 December 2022
When the outlook is bleak, try the ‘up‐look’. That is what Hezekiah did when he received the terrifying and blasphemous letter from Sennacherib, King of Assyria (v.20). How did God answer his prayer (v.21)? This shows who the true God is. Let us not be discouraged even when we face mockery. We serve the living and mighty God. It is also reassuring to know that when we have done everything that is humanly possible, our ‘God specializes in things thought impossible’. He takes care of us ‘on every side’ (v.22).
The Bible often gives a complete picture of its heroes. Hezekiah was a faithful, prayerful and a prosperous king but unfortunately like all of us, he had his lapses of faith and failures. He became proud and did not respond to the kindness that the Lord had shown him (v.25). Notice, however, the good example he showed in the following verse (v.26). We must learn to be humble, especially when the Lord answers our prayers in a spectacular way and prospers us. “Pride goes before destruction” (Proverbs 16:18).
