We are here told that the reason the three friends kept quiet was because they felt that Job appeared righteous in his own eyes. Based on Job 1:1,8, how accurate was their perception of Job? Rather, the observation of Elihu, a young bystander who insisted on speaking his mind, shows the friends as poor losers in their arguments. Elihu’s view reveals several interesting points:
1. True wisdom is from God. Old age is not necessarily an indicator of understanding. When we lack wisdom and direction, what should we do? See James 1:5; James 3:17-18.
2. By listening attentively to the discourse without interruption, Elihu gained great insight. Active listening before speaking is an important skill that enhances interpersonal relationships and reduces misunderstanding and anger (James 1:19).
3. Elihu is poised to be objective, taking side with none of them, not even with Job but to say, “the truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth.” When it falls on us to mediate between two factions, it is our divine responsibility to be as objective as possible.
