TODAY’S OUTLINE: By the sacrifice of Christ, the curtain which represented restriction of access to the presence of God was torn (Mark 15:38). Thus, we now have access to, and unrestricted personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ (vs.19-20). Read vs.22-25 again and notice the privileges and responsibilities we now have as a result of this access?

We can now worship God with conscious enjoyment of freedom from guilt and a sense of personal holiness, made possible by the sacrifice of Christ (v.22). But we also have the responsibility to hold on steadfastly to the hope of our faith, having mutual concern for the spiritual growth of one another and never failing to fellowship with one another for mutual encouragement of ourselves, in view of our Lord’s imminent return.

There are people who claim to be Christians nowadays but who do not belong to any church. They call themselves “Done-with-church.” Personal access to God is not a licence to isolate ourselves from fellowship (v.25). If we isolate ourselves, we will soon die off, like lone firewood, no matter how spiritually fervent we may be (Proverbs 27:17). There’s a group that call themselves “brethren” or “the Church in … (a town), e.g. Benin”. Beware of such.

• Thank you, Lord Jesus, for giving me free access to the Father by your blood. Help me never to trivialise or misuse my access.
