Scripture Union Daily Guide 19 September 2025 Outline

Job had refuted the conclusions of his friends about his situation (Job 16, Job 17). In this passage, Bildad reaffirmed their wrong theological assumption that suffering is always the consequence of sin. He wants Job to keep quiet and listen (Job 18:2,3). He wondered if Job wanted them to abandon their theological position which was as established as rocks (Job 18:4).

We could also be holding similar strong but wrong theological positions because of our limited understanding and wrong assumptions about God’s sovereignty. We should be willing to re-examine our stand rather than argue when our positions are challenged by others. Our simplistic theology may not always sufficiently explain God’s dealings with His creation (Isaiah 55:8-9). Read Job 18:6-14 again.

Observe how Bildad described the fate of the wicked. He was probably describing Job. He concluded that the boils on Job’s body (Job 18:13), the destruction of his livestock by fire (Job 18:15), and the loss of all his children (Job 18:16-19) were all rewards of his wickedness. He accused Job of lack of the knowledge of God (Job 18:21). Do you think Bildad’s assumptions are always true of the wicked? Compare Psalms 73:1-5,17.
