Scripture Union Daily Guide 1st December 2024 – God Has Given Us Eternal Life

DAILY GUIDE DEVOTIONAL 1 DECEMBER 2024

TOPIC: GOD HAS GIVEN US ETERNAL LIFE!
OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, I pray that you order my steps today through your word as I meditate on it.
SCRIPTURE: 1 JOHN 5:1-12

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 1st December 2024 Outline

Today’s passage is very encouraging and very instructive. Note the repetition of the word ‘testimony’ (vs.9-12). The apostle John wanted us to be truly sure of the fact that “God’s testimony is greater because it is of God” (v.9).

Sadly, many people in the world today would rather accept human testimony and not God’s. Notice the caution about this attitude in v.10. Here are three important testimonies God wants you to believe:

– Jesus is the Christ (vs.1-5): How is this related to loving God, obeying God’s commands, and experiencing victory over the world? Our faith in Christ must result in faithful obedience.

– God’s witness about Jesus (vs.6-10): God testified about Jesus at His baptism and on the Mount of Transfiguration (Matthew 3:17; 17:5). By His blood, we have been saved (1 John 2:1-2), and through Him, we have the Spirit of truth who testifies to all these in our hearts and to the world (Acts 2:33).

– Only Jesus gives eternal life: See vs.11-12. We must be born of God (born again) to escape the second death. Anyone who is born twice dies only once; and anyone who is born only once (just the natural birth) will die twice. “Know Jesus, know life” and “No Jesus, no life”.

Practice/Word Application
And so? Do you personally believe God’s testimony about Jesus? How are you helping others to know this testimony?

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Hymn: I know not why
1. I know not why my Savior
Has done so much for me;
I know not why His favor
Has come so constantly;
But this I know: I love Him
And trust Him day by day,
And cast my care upon Him,
And watch and praise and pray.

2. I know not why my Savior
Should leave a glorious throne
To bleed and die on Calvary,
For sinners to atone;
But this I know, ’tis certain,
He fully ransomed me,
And in that truth believing
I realize I’m free.

3. I know not why He bids me
Breathe forth my wants in prayer,
While day by day He sees me,
And knows my every care;
But this I know, while praying
And trusting in His Word,
My soul refreshed and strengthened,
Rests sweetly on the Lord.

4. I know not where He leads me,
And yet I follow still;
I know not why He needs me
My vineyard place to fill:
But this I know, at duty
In prayer or holy song,
My heart keeps overflowing
With rapture all day long!

Closing Prayer
Pray for Christians to take the work of evangelism and discipleship seriously.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalms 115:12
