Scripture Union Daily Guide 1st October 2020

TOPIC: HOLD FIRM TO WHAT IS GOOD

Opening Prayer: Lord, let the light of your word shine into my life as I meditate on your word.

Scripture: 1 Thessalonians 5: 12 – 28.

Reflection:
• Is there any command for me to obey?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?

MESSAGE: Scripture Union Daily Guide 1st October 2020

This passage is full of practical instructions (vv.12–22): First, there are instructions concerning the people they would meet. Could Paul be speaking about your minister or group leader in vv.12,13; and some relative, classmate, or co–worker in vv.14,15? God wants you to give them honest and godly counsel, encouragement and assistance as the need arises.

Ask the Lord to lead you to someone you could help today. Secondly, Paul speaks of maintaining contact with God (vv.16–22). He is the source of true joy. We should be in constant touch with him daily in prayer (v.17), and thanksgiving (v.18). God speaks to us through his word as we read it or hear it preached.

As we take in God’s word daily, we are equipped with the Holy Spirit to rightly judge the messages we hear (Acts 17:11). Since we so depend on the Holy Spirit for guidance into the truth and all of life and service, we must not “quench”, “put out” or resist his loving moves in us.

He is our light and fire. We must let him shine in our minds, warm and burn in our hearts. If we have no such help, carrying out these instructions would be impossible. Paul ends his letter by directing us to the available help (vv.23,24, 28).

⁂ Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Practice/Word Application:
Reflection: Reflect on vv.16–22. Try to memorize these verses. They are short verses.

1. What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Refrain
Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

2. Now by this I’ll overcome–
Nothing but the blood of Jesus,
Now by this I’ll reach my home–
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Prayer:
• May my life impact those who labour over me as well as others around me. May they see you in me, dear Lord.
• Pray to walk in the power that raised Jesus from the dead.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with Genesis 35:11
