The background to v.1 is that Ashdod was one of the five main cities of the Philistines. To appreciate the setting, identify the other cities (you may search for the cities on the internet). It was a stronghold and key in capturing Egypt. Why do you think God handed Ashdod over to the king of Assyria?

For three years, God asked prophet Isaiah to walk undignified without his cloak and barefoot on the streets of Jerusalem as a sign of the humiliation that would befall the captives of Egypt and the exiles of Ethiopia or the Cushites (vs.2-4).

Though somewhat shameful and humiliating, Isaiah did according to God’s instruction. How many of us today are ready to be humiliated because of our faith in Jesus Christ?
Judah was hoping that if it joined forces with Egypt and Ethiopia, they would be able to withstand the Assyrians. The sign of Isaiah was to warn them not to put their trust in any man, however powerful he may appear to be (vs.5-6).

Practice/Word Application
