Is it the norm that a leader entrusted to survey and allocate land for his/her nation fails to allocate land for himself and only awaits to be allocated by the community? This is what we find in Joshua. “The Israelites gave Joshua son of Nun an inheritance among them… as the Lord had commanded” (vs.49,50).
The ability of a leader to be selfless, full of integrity and strictly adhere to and uphold God’s commands is worth emulating. Joshua is a good example. Numbers 35:6-27 give a necessary background to 20:1-9.
Notice the elaborate framework for justice in order to provide a fair trial to anyone who might have killed another person unintentionally. The cities of refuge assured the accused that justice would be served. What conditions were the accused expected to abide by (20:4, 6)? How is justice served in our nations and Christian circles?
How does the process of a fair trial among the nations of Africa mirror the provisions of justice portrayed in today’s passage? Whereas today we do not have cities of refuge, we receive mercy and pardon when we run to God and confess our sins.
