Scripture Union Daily Guide 22 October 2024 Outline

Have you ever watched the way a lamb bleats in distress when separated from its mother? This is what the psalmist is doing here, except that the plight of Israel is even worse. It is from the Great Shepherd they are separated (v.1); because He was angry with them (vs.4-6). Changing the analogy from sheep to vine, see how God had looked after them in the past (vs.8-11). Now, they have lost all the privileges of God’s tender care, and the results are painful in the extreme (vs.5-6; 12-13).

Every one of us is familiar with Psalm 23 where we learn of the wonderful privileges we have because “the Lord is my Shepherd”. Sadly, when we stray from the Shepherd as Christians, we can find ourselves in “the valley of the shadow of death” (Psalm 23:4). What should we do when that happens?

We should do our own human version of bleating like this psalmist. We should repent of our sin and cry to God for restoration (vs.1, 3, 7, 14, 19). He is sure to forgive and to rescue us because of His mercy and grace.
