Scripture Union Daily Guide 22nd July 2020 – God of Wonders

TODAY’S TOPIC: GOD OF WONDERS

OPENING PRAYER: Dear Lord, I pray that you order my steps today through your word as I meditate on it.

SCRIPTURE: Acts 5:12─21a
12 And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon’s porch.

13 And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them.

14 And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.)

15 Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.

16 There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.

17 Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation,

18 And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison.

19 But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said,

20 Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.

21 And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught.

Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

TODAY’S OUTLINE: DAILY GUIDE 22ND JULY 2020

Observe how Christ’s miraculous healing ministry continued through the apostles (vv.12,15–16 cf. Matthew 14:35–36). With one accord, and in obedience, they preached the gospel and where there is unity, God commands his blessings. God is indeed a God of miracles and if we come to him in faith, we also can live a life of miracles. As the church grew (v.14), notice how opposition increased from Jewish leaders (vv.17–18).

The proclamation of Jesus is inevitably linked to persecution in some form. The growing number of persecuted Christians around the world testifies to this. Despite hardships and trials, the children of God are assured of the Lord’s presence by their side and of his care (v.19).

How does this encourage us to share the gospel boldly? Notice that the apostles are freed from prison for a purpose (v.20). They faithfully obeyed God’s instructions as soon as the day dawned (v.21a). What remarkable boldness! How do we compare to these devoted servants of God?

⁂ Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Practice/Word Application
• So what? What lessons about how to respond to God’s Word can we learn from the apostles (vv.20–21)?
Prayer
• Thank you, Lord, for your constant intervention in our lives.
• Praise God for who He is ─ the King of kings, Almighty, Holy and Righteous, all Powerful, Unchangeable, Kind and Merciful beyond measure, beautiful for every situation.
• Offer a prayer of faith in line with 2 Corinthians 12:9

Read the Bible in one Year: Psalms 33–34; Acts 16:22–40
