Scripture Union Daily Guide 23 November 2024: Living In The Light With God
Daily Guide Devotional For Today 23rd November 2024 (Saturday)
TOPIC: LIVING IN THE LIGHT WITH GOD
OPENING PRAYER: As I read your word O Lord, grant me an insight and grace to do your will in Jesus name.
SCRIPTURE: 1 JOHN 1:1-10
INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK OF 1 JOHN
John, the author of the Gospel of John, who usually refers to himself as, ‘the disciple whom Jesus loved’ (John 21:20) also wrote the three letters that bear his name. His letters were believed to be written to Christians scattered throughout the province of Asia. He wrote the first to denounce the teachings of the “antichrist” (1 John 4:1-3). One of such teachings is that Jesus did not come in the flesh. He wrote to clear the differences between light and darkness, truth and error, etc. He encouraged us Christians to live in fellowship and have genuine love for God and the brethren; and have the assurance that we have eternal life in Jesus Christ.
Question(s) for Reflection
* Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
* Q7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
Scripture Union Daily Guide 23 November 2024 Outline:
Read vs.1-2 again and compare with John 1:1-4, 14, noting the similarities of the words John used in the two passages as an eyewitness.
What two purposes were this letter meant to accomplish (vs.3-4)? Fellowship is sharing or doing things together as friends. Fellowship with God requires absolute purity and holiness as light depicts (v.5). There is no evil in God and He cannot condone sin (Habakkuk 1:13). If we are living in sin (immorality, lying, evil practices, etc.), we are in darkness and cannot have fellowship with the Light (See 2 Corinthians 6:14-16).
The proof of our fellowship with God is not so much in our words but much more in our lifestyle. That is how we “practise the truth” (v.6b). Since God is light and everything about us is plain before Him, we only deceive ourselves and may be others, when we pretend to be true Christians. Vs.8 and 10 give the true picture of what we really are before God when we deny our sins – self-righteous and self-deceiving individuals (Isaiah 64:6). But the Good News is in v.9.
Practice/Word Application
So? Read vs.6-7 again and spend time to do what verse nine admonishes us to do.
* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer
Father, may the light of Word expose and reveal my real person to me .Lord lead me to turn to you and forsake evil in Jesus name.
