Scripture Union Daily Guide 24th July 2020 – Preaching Christ, At What Cost?
TODAY’S TOPIC: PREACHING CHRIST, AT WHAT COST?
OPENING PRAYER: May the meditation of my heart be acceptable unto you, O Lord as I read from your word.
SCRIPTURE: Acts 5:33–42
Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
TODAY’S OUTLINE: DAILY GUIDE 24TH JULY 2020
Notice the response of the Sanhedrin to Peter’s simple presentation of the gospel message (v.33). Following Christ will often bring Christians to face the wrath of civil, religious and or traditional authorities, as we saw yesterday. We must be prepared to face such situations gallantly as the apostles did in today’s reading.
It is God’s sovereign prerogative how he delivers his witnesses when they face such situations. How did he do it in today’s passage (vv.34─40)? Gamaliel was right in his logic (vv.38–39a). Think about his two final statements. They are very true and applicable to us today.
Therefore, let us watch what we do and always ensure they are of God. Let us mind how we oppose people so we do not find ourselves “fighting against God”. The Council was persuaded but did their action afterward show they really understood the import of Gamaliel’s advice (v.40)? No doubt, God used this to spare the apostles from grave persecution at that time.
The Apostles were beaten for preaching, discharged and sternly warned not to preach any more. What can you learn from their reaction (vv.41–42)? They could do this because of their resolve in v.29. Are you ready to obey the Lord even when this means risking your life?
⁂ Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
