Scripture Union Daily Guide 24th July 2025 Outline
Samson was fully aware of his special consecration, and that it was possible to “become weak and be like any other man” if his head is shaved (Judges 16:7,11,13,17). Unfortunately, his strength as an ordinary man didn’t match his divine strength, ultimately leading to his downfall.
In His grace, God restored Samson’s strength as his hair began to grow again (Judges 16:22; see Numbers 6:9-12). Notice how they mocked God because of Samson’s fall (Judges 16:23-25,26). Samson had been acclaimed by Philistines as “one who laid waste our land and multiplied our slain” (Judges 16:24), but now had become a humiliated menial worker and entertainer in the same town in which he had been greatly feared.
Samson prayed “Let me… get revenge…for my two eyes” (Judges 16:28). It became his personal vengeance (see also Judges 15:5,7), rather than a divine assignment, unlike David who “fought the Lord’s battles” (1 Samuel 25:28). We must never take God for granted no matter how greatly endowed we are! That is called presumption. Better be humble and repent than stubbornly persist in sin (Isaiah 66:2b). However, note Samson’s prayer/faith (Judges 16:28) and God’s answer that fulfilled God’s initial purpose for calling him (Judges 16:29-30 cf. Judges 13:5).
And So
Reflect on how Samson’s fall had far-reaching consequences on himself, his family, Israel, and on God Almighty (see Romans 2:24; Isaiah 52:5b; Ezekiel 36:20,22).
