Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 26 March 2023

The date set to carry out Haman’s decree to completely destroy the Jews arrives. But the opposite of Haman’s plan happens (v.1). It is the Jews who kill their enemies across all the provinces. The King’s administrators in the provinces assisted the Jews. These officials are very much aware that Mordecai, the Jew, is now in charge of all the King’s affairs, and they fear him (vs.3-4).

Haman’s sin caused his own death, that of his ten sons and of many others. His sons are publicly hung on the gallows on which he had made plans to hang the Jews. What lessons can we learn from this? The public hanging of Haman’s sons, the display of their corpses, was probably a warning to the enemies of the Jews and to serve as deterrent for their oppressors.

The Jews were fighting for survival and not for material gain. Three times it was stated, “They did not lay their hands on the plunder” (vs.10, 15, 16). Such discipline and dedication are worthy of note and a challenge to us today. Compare Joshua 7:1,20-21; 2 Kings 5:20-27).
