Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 27 October 2023
Notice that as God pronounces judgment on Babylon, He also pronounces mercy and restoration on Jacob (v.1).
What else does God promise Israel in vs.2-4? Did you notice the invitation to the nations (Gentiles) to receive the goodness of the Lord with the Israelites (v.2)? Babylon, under the rule of Nebuchadnezzar was a powerful nation. However, it ruled for selfish pleasure (vs.3-6). When God gives power, it is not meant to be vindictive and punitive, but to bring justice and rest to His people. Sometimes we get so weary and discouraged from Satan’s attack. But one day his oppression will cease, and the LORD will break the staff of the wicked, and the sceptre of the rulers.
Vs.9-11 portray the fallen king of Babylon being received in hell. What does this say about Satan’s final destination? We often – to his great delight – exaggerate Satan’s status and importance. We tend to think of him as the opposite of God, yet, he is a mere creature who is in no way the opposite of God. Vs.12-19 appear to describe another personality. Who do you think this portion describes? Vs.18-23 describes the utter end of Babylon as represented by its king.
