From yesterday’s passage, God instructed Israel to establish cities of refuge. The cities of refuge were God’s provision of escape for someone who unintentionally kills another person (Numbers 35:25). Our courts today also distinguish between intentional killing (murder) and unintentional killing (manslaughter). Hitting a person and killing him while driving is an example of unintentional killing.
Note in Numbers 35:26-27 the condition for the continuous enjoyment of this provision. This is a foreshadow of our salvation in Christ Jesus. Because He has died for us, we are permanently protected from the avenger of blood, the devil. And through faith in Him, we escape the consequences of our sins (Romans 6:23; Romans 8:1). But we must never stray away but remain (abide) under the continuous cover of our High Priest, the Lord Jesus (see John 15:5-6).
God is strongly against bloodshed. Note in Numbers 35:33-34 the effect of bloodshed on our land and the relationship with God. Think of the wars, fighting, assassinations, abortions etc, taking place in your country and how the land is being polluted daily. What will you do in your own little way to help salvage the situation?
