Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 3 October 2023
God enumerates about six social evils going on in Judah and the accompanying judgments. Check the following verses to identify them. Vs.8-10 (land exploitation), vs.11-17 (pleasure seeking and godlessness), vs.18-19 (making fun of God), v.20 (twisting the truth), v.21 (intellectual pride), vs.22-24 (perverting justice). Are these evils familiar even nowadays? What can we learn from God’s warning to Judah?
Similar evils exist in our societies and sometimes in the Church. Greedy land hoarders acquire or grab all the land around. Sometimes they eliminate the poor and powerless who wants to stand in their way. Some of our judges are corrupt. They condemn the innocent and acquit the guilty after collecting huge bribes. All such evils are clear violation of God’s law and they will be judged sooner or later (vs.26-30). How do we in our little ways engage in some of these evils? We need to remember that any wealth acquired through corruption, violence and oppression of the poor and powerless does not have God’s blessing, no matter how faithfully we give our tithe and offering. Instead, it will only bring God’s wrath on us if we fail to repent.

Closing Prayer:
Lord, open my eyes to see areas in my life where I am contributing to, or benefitting from social evils. Please forgive me and deliver me from them.
