Scripture Union Daily Guide 31st July 2025 Outline
The Israeli army went to Gibeah and asked them to surrender the pervert men to be put to death in order to purge the land of evil (Judges 20:12-13). But sadly, the Benjamites wouldn’t accede to their demand (Judges 20:14). What did they do instead (Judges 20:15-16)?
The Israeli coalition forces were about fifteen times more than the Benjamin forces. To be sure of who should lead the army into the battle, Israel consulted God and God affirmed that Judah would lead (Judges 20:18). What shocking episodes do you notice that seemingly negated God’s affirmation in Judges 20:21-25? The tragic defeats of Israel’s army by a small Benjamin troop were quite humiliating and incomprehensible more so when God told them twice to go ahead with the war. What do you think could be the reason(s) for this?
Victory does not lie in a huge military force with sophisticated weapons. We must humbly depend on God as we fight His battles, just like the Israelites humbled themselves after their shocking two times defeat. How different was God’s response in Judges 20:28 compared with the previous occasions?
