Scripture Union Daily Guide 7 July 2024 Outline:

Solomon in this Psalm focuses on the main responsibility of the king or political leader. He should uphold justice and righteousness, defend the defenceless, the poor and afflicted. He recognised the importance of this when he requested for understanding (wisdom) to discern between good and evil so he can govern the people rightly and he demonstrated this wisdom in his ruling in the case of the two prostitutes. (Find time to read 1 Kings 3.)

Notice the people’s heart desire in vs.2, 7&12-14. When justice is maintained and the poor is defended, the citizens given their rights, then there will be peace and prosperity in the nation. The leader, ‘will be like rain … like showers watering the earth’ (v.6).

Take note of other consequence of such righteous leadership in v.16. People deprived of their rights, who face unjust treatment, will fight back and destabilise the nation. Farmers who are not protected but faced death from robbers and held to ransom by kidnappers cannot but desert their farms with resulting famine, inflation, and economic downturn. These are not far from our experiences in some African countries today!

A righteous leader provokes the prayer and good wishes of his people (vs.8-11, 15, 17) and they will offer praises to the Lord for such blessing (vs.18-19).

Hail to the Lord’s Anointed
1. Hail to the Lord’s Anointed,
great David’s greater Son!
Hail in the time appointed,
his reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression,
to set the captive free;
to take away transgression,
and rule in equity.

2. He comes with succor speedy
to those who suffer wrong;
to help the poor and needy,
and bid the weak be strong;
to give them songs for sighing,
their darkness turn to light,
whose souls, condemned and dying,
are precious in his sight.

3. He shall come down like showers
upon the fruitful earth;
love, joy, and hope, like flowers,
spring in his path to birth.
Before him on the mountains,
shall peace, the herald, go,
and righteousness, in fountains,
from hill to valley flow.

4. To him shall prayer unceasing
and daily vows ascend;
his kingdom still increasing,
a kingdom without end.
The tide of time shall never
his covenant remove;
his name shall stand forever;
that name to us is love.

Closing Prayer
Pray for leaders who are just and righteous.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Genesis 12:3
“And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”
