Scripture Union Daily Guide 7th February 2025 Outline

John was arrested by Herod because he had not been tactful in approaching a leader concerning his errors. Herod had taken his brother’s wife and John outrightly spoke against him. As a result, he was imprisoned. Nathan, one time while confronting David about his sins, used a parable (2 Samuel 12:1-9).

John, like any other Jew of his time, misunderstood Christ’s mission on earth. They expected a conquering, not a suffering, Messiah; a deliverer from Herod’s jail, not from Satan’s prison. So, John felt disappointed, and doubts started setting in even though he had clear assurance from heaven that Jesus was the expected Messiah.

That a prophet like John could have periods of doubt should be a warning to those of us who may be overconfident. Was Jesus answering John’s questions by sharing His testimony? See the prophecies concerning the ministry of the Messiah (Isaiah 61:1-2, compare Luke 4:18-19). When our problems appear to be without a solution, the tendency is to think that God has forgotten about, or even abandoned, us. But God never abandons His own.

His promise is sure (see Matthew 28:20b, compare Hebrews 13:5b). However, God’s answer may not always be what we are expecting especially when we ask amiss.
Jesus paid glowing tributes to John and his ministry (Matthew 11:7-11), but John remained in prison and was subsequently beheaded.
