Scripture Union Daily Guide 8 December 2025 Outline

Notice what happens when we rely on our own wisdom rather than on the wisdom from above (1 Samuel 27:1-4). Instead of maintaining confidence in God, David turned to logic and succumbed to fear for his life. He did not bother to seek God’s direction before he went to live in another enemy territory.

Yes, he was free from the pursuits of King Saul but was now an ally to the enemies of God’s people. He found favour with the Philistine king, Achish, and was given the town of Ziklag as a possession (1 Samuel 27:5-6). However, he had to resort to living a life of deception all the days he was in the territory of the enemy. This was not the first time David sought refuge outside Israel (see 1 Samuel 21:10-15). Remember the consequences at that time and God’s specific instruction to him afterwards (1 Samuel 22:5)?

What is the warning here for us? Sometimes our living circumstances can become so difficult and unbearable that we may choose to live double lives! No matter what the situation might be, a life of lies is not acceptable to God. The world calls such “situation ethics” but God calls it sin.

Closing Prayer
Whatever hardships I may encounter, help me, Father, to remain true to you. May your Spirit of truth cause me to be restless whenever I am tempted to justify any sinful lifestyle because of the difficulty I may be facing.
