* Q3: Is there any command for me to obey?
* Q5: Is there any warning for me to heed?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 8 September 2024 Message:

Notice the state of the early church here: growth and complaints. What is the source of the complaints (v.1)? This is a good portrait of the church today. There are positive things happening, and there are imperfections as well. The apostles did not diminish the stature of the challenge at hand yet, they recognized that spending their time and energy to resolve the manifesting problem would be a derailment to their core ministry (v.2).

Are there times church leaders focus on non-primary matters and lose focus of their primary duty and calling? How did they resolve the challenge (vs.4-5)? Notice the qualifications of those who were to be chosen for the administration.

Read v.7 and take note of the impact this decision brought to the church. Administration is not a lesser form of ministry neither is it subordinate. It is an integral component of people management whose result is growth, increased productivity, and in the ministry context, obedience, and witness to the faith.

The next 7 days will focus on two of these administrative leaders: Stephen and Philip. The impact of Stephen’s service was so superior that the only way to silence him was to instigate a false accusation (vs.9-14). Notice how far and wide the false accusers were drawn from (v.9). How does v.15 encourage you in moments of uncertainty and even death occasioned by ministry engagements?

Lord, whose love in humble service
1. Lord, whose love in humble service
bore the weight of human need,
who upon the cross, forsaken,
worked your mercy’s perfect deed,
we, your servants, bring the worship
not of voice alone, but heart,
consecrating to your purpose
every gift that you impart.

2 Still your children wander homeless;
still the hungry cry for bread;
still the captives long for freedom;
still in grief we mourn our dead.
As you, Lord, in deep compassion
healed the sick and freed the soul,
use the love your Spirit kindles
still to make your people whole.

3 As we worship, grant us vision
till your love’s revealing light
in its height and depth and greatness
dawns upon our quickened sight,
making known the needs and burdens
your compassion bids us bear,
stirring us to tireless striving,
your abundant life to share.

4 Called from worship into service,
forward in your name we go,
to the child, the youth, the aged,
love in living deeds to show.
Hope and health, goodwill and comfort,
counsel, aid, and peace we give,
that your children, Lord, in freedom
may your mercy know, and live.

Closing Prayer
Oh Lord, fill me with your Spirit so that I may serve you faithfully and courageously.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Isaiah 54:13
“And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.”
