Scripture Union Daily Guide 9 January 2025 Outline
Matthew 6:16-18: Notice again that Jesus said, “when …;” not “if ….” Jesus expects us to practise the discipline of fasting just as He did. But He warns us not to turn it into an attention-seeking exercise but to humbly keep it between us and God. When fasting, open yourself up to the Holy Spirit’s leading. Confess and repent from any sin He brings to your notice and seek to please only Christ.
Matthew 6:19-21: In these days of materialism, Christians must be careful that our treasures (money, investments, property) do not become our god. As useful as they are, they are highly perishable and useful only in this world. They can be affected by inflation, be stolen, and lost totally, e.g., through the uncertainties in the stock markets. Whatever we may acquire on earth is ours only for a while.
Note the warning in Matthew 6:21 (compare 2 Corinthians 8:5). Remember that your giving only becomes relevant to God after you have first given your life to Him. Consider the various ways we can store up our earthly treasures in heaven so they can have eternal value.
Never allow the pursuit of earthly treasures to blur your vision of heaven (Matthew 6:22-23).
