Scripture Union Daily Guide 9th December 2020 – Only One Gospel
You are reading Today’s Scripture Union Daily Guide for Wednesday 9th December 2020. Be inspired by today’s reading. God bless you!
TOPIC: ONLY ONE GOSPEL
Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, make me more like you through the power of your word as I meditate on it.
Introduction To Galatians:
The Judaizers were Jewish Christians who, along with their faith in Christ, continued to hold on to some aspects of the Mosaic Law as essential to full salvation. These include circumcision and dietary prohibitions. In response, Paul in this letter, emphasizes that it is by faith alone that people are put right with God.
The Book of Galatians answers the question posed in Acts 16:30, “What must I do to be saved?” to which Paul answered, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved”. Christ has done it all and there remains nothing for us to do or add. We only need to believe in his finished work and receive the free gift of eternal life.
Evidence to this declaration is given in Galatians – we are free from the Law; not only is the sinner saved by grace through faith, the saved sinner also lives by grace through faith. “Grace is the way to life and the way of life.”
Scripture: Galatians 1:1–10
Reflection:
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?
MESSAGE: Scripture Union Daily Guide 9th December 2020
Note the credentials of Paul and his testimony about the Lord Jesus. The Judaizers had dissuaded the people from following Paul’s teaching by first discrediting his claim to Apostleship, hence, his statement in v.1 (cf. Acts 9:15).
The resurrection is the centre of the gospel and the strongest proof of the deity and Messiahship of Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 15: 1–5). Paul ensured that the right foundation was set up based on faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus alone.
But other so–called Christian leaders were peddling another gospel, the gospel of faith plus works, hence the severe “anathema” (eternal condemnation) warnings in vv.8 – 9. The human soul is of such importance to God that no one dares toy with it.
We have false teachers today just as the Galatians had in the time of Paul. If we stay close to the Bible, we will be able to discern wrong teachings and avoid being led astray. Note Paul’s goal in v.10? Is this also your goal in life?
