OPENING PRAYER: Grant me depth of insight, revelation and knowledge as I meditate on this passage, O Lord.

SCRIPTURE: Luke 3: 10 ‐20

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?

Scripture Union SU Daily Guide 2nd January 2022 – Outline

Remember John’s challenge yesterday (v.8a). Today, he explains what this means in practice. Producing fruit that shows you are truly repentant varies from person to person. The Yoruba word for repentance, ironupiwada, is very descriptive. It literally means, ‘think deeply and change your character’. If you think deeply and find you are doing the wrong thing, then you should make a U‐turn. That is when repentance is real and complete.

John had no doubt about his mission. He refused to yield to the ‘noble’ suggestions of his followers or be diverted from his own mission of simply being the forerunner of the Messiah. The applause of followers can tempt us to veer away from our calling. John fearlessly proclaimed the truth to all – security officers, religious leaders, civil servants, rulers.

Proclaiming the truth can sometimes put one at loggerheads with powerful people with dire consequence (vs.20‐21; see also Matthew 14:3‐11). Are you ready to faithfully declare Christ’s truth, no matter the cost?

For Further Study
For John’s clear understanding of his mission, see John 3:22‐30.
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
1 ‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
and to take him at his word;
just to rest upon his promise,
and to know, “Thus saith the Lord.”

Refrain:
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him!
How I’ve proved him o’er and o’er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust him more!

2 O how sweet to trust in Jesus,
just to trust his cleansing blood;
and in simple faith to plunge me
neath the healing, cleansing flood! [Refrain]

3 Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus,
just from sin and self to cease;
just from Jesus simply taking
life and rest, and joy and peace.

Closing Prayer
• Lord, give me grace to fearlessly proclaim your truth to all.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Isaiah 43:16 ‐ 19
16 Thus saith the LORD, which maketh a way in the sea, and a path in the mighty waters;

17 Which bringeth forth the chariot and horse, the army and the power; they shall lie down together, they shall not rise: they are extinct, they are quenched as tow.

18 Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.

19 Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

Bible Reading: Genesis 2; Psalm 3,4
