Scripture Union SU Daily Guide 26 December 2021 | Outline

The birth of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, is the greatest event in history. There were many people in Israel waiting for His coming, but as one who would overthrow the Roman imperialists. They could not have accepted Jesus’ nature and mission (v.10-12) considering His birthplace. The shepherds, however, were different. Although they too reacted naturally in fear when the angels suddenly appeared (v.9), they readily believed the message. Read vs.10–11 again and note at least five significant points in the angel’s message.

The shepherds did something about the information they received (vs.15- 18, 20). Notice what Mary did in v. 19. Their action in vs.17&20 is a good example to follow. Recognising that the good news was not for them alone, but for all the people (v.10), “they spread the word concerning the child”. While in Matthew’s account (Matthew 2:1-2), the notice of His birth was given to wise men who were Gentiles, by a star; here in Luke, the notice to the shepherds who were Jews, was given by an angel.

God speaks to people of diverse backgrounds through diverse means common to them. The good news is for “all people” (Genesis 12:3c) and it remains the greatest news to all whether Jew or Gentile, poor or rich, literate and illiterate, male or female and from whatever race. Enthusiastically receive this news and spread it.

Practice/Word Application
• Action: Like the shepherds, decide to have an encounter with the Saviour,
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Praise God for His great love for all the people and announce the good news to many.
• Thank God for His provisions through your work place or business and ask for more productive week ahead

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
Micah 6-7; Luke 22:21-46
