Notice the great length to which the landowner went to ensure the farmers have all they need for a fruitful vineyard (v.33). The farmers went into a contract with the landowner, a contract it appears they were not ready to fulfil. Worst still, they went all out to frustrate every effort the landowner made to collect what was due him. Many people refuse to accept the fact that the world has a real owner, the Creator God, to whom all human beings are accountable.

People can decide to live as they like, but when the time of reckoning dawns, God will mete out punishment to those who decide to defy his authority over His world. In what ways are we currently defying the authority of God? Can we see some of the consequences of disobedience in our modern societies? What are some of these? The tenants killed the Landlord’s son, a picture of the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ.

He was rejected by the leaders and handed over to the Roman authorities to be crucified. But through His death, God in his wisdom brought salvation to all mankind including the Israelites. What men intend for evil, God can turn to good (v.42, c.f., Genesis 50:19–20).
