James who chaired the Council meeting was a brother of Jesus (not Apostle James, see Acts 12:1-2). He became a key leader in the Church in Jerusalem. Assess his summary of the discussions that had taken place. The prophecy of Amos (9:11-12) in vs.16-17 which James quoted reminded the leaders that Jesus Christ has rebuilt and restored the kingdom of David through His death and resurrection. Now the door is wide open for the remnant (Jews) and Gentiles to receive the salvation of the Lord without precondition.

The prohibitions in v.20 are not attempts to introduce the Law through the back door. There are practices in our culture that are clearly ungodly and must be ‘no go’ area for us. In a society replete with idolatrous practices including sexual orgies during their pagan religious festivals, boundaries need to be set. Prohibition of blood predates Moses (see Genesis 9:4). Christians are free from the Law but are not lawless.

This is a serious issue that could destroy the church if not handled carefully. The dissemination of the decision was wisely handled. Respected people were selected to carry the carefully written letter. Christians must ensure sound administrative procedures are set in place for smooth running of our church and fellowship.

Practice/Word Application
• For Action: What can you do to encourage better administration in your church?
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Pray that the church may demonstrate spirit-led style of leadership.
• Pray for Human Rights organizations to take interest in the persecution of Christians.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
• Nahum; Col. 2
