Opening Prayer: Thank You, God, that the more I know You, the more I want to know You. Be known in me today.
Read Psalm 71
Psalm 71
1 In you, Lord, I have taken refuge;
let me never be put to shame.
2 In your righteousness, rescue me and deliver me;
turn your ear to me and save me.
3 Be my rock of refuge,
to which I can always go;
give the command to save me,
for you are my rock and my fortress.
4 Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked,
from the grasp of those who are evil and cruel.
5 For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord,
my confidence since my youth.
6 From birth I have relied on you;
you brought me forth from my mother’s womb.
I will ever praise you.
7 I have become a sign to many;
you are my strong refuge.
8 My mouth is filled with your praise,
declaring your splendor all day long.
9 Do not cast me away when I am old;
do not forsake me when my strength is gone.
10 For my enemies speak against me;

Reflect: How deep is your relationship with God? How long have you known him?
In his book, Falling Upward, Richard Rohr addresses the subject of Christian discipleship in the second half of life. He challenges us that the “containers” that held our theology, practice and understanding in earlier years may need to be exchanged for ones that reflect changes and opportunities.
This psalm echoes something of the realism that comes with aging. The psalmist is anxious that God may overlook him in his old age (9,18) and reminds God that he has been a disciple since he was young (17). In a wider culture that often celebrates and notices young people, it can also be with the church. I know from firsthand knowledge that there are many people of mature years who feel overlooked and forgotten. Their prayer is this psalm. Maybe it’s your prayer too. And like the psalmist we need to capture the audacity of faith. “I will come and proclaim Your mighty acts, Sovereign Lord; I will proclaim Your righteous deeds, Yours alone” (16).
Apply: What season are you in with your relationship with God? Are you in the newness of spring? The frozen winter of waiting? Take time to talk with God and just work on building your relationship.
Closing prayer: Father, I have lived through different seasons, but today I turn to You for a fresh encounter.
