God’s Light in Me

TODAY’S READING
John 1:1-14

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. – John 1:5 (NIV)

For several years I lived in a place where electricity could not be depended on. Most days we had electricity for three or four hours in the evening, but when the electricity abruptly went off there was total darkness. On clear nights the stars of the Milky Way and the moon provided light, but on cloudy nights the darkness was complete. I often woke up in the night, heard the howls of packs of dogs or wolves, and felt suffocated by the darkness.

On one of these cold, dark nights I woke up in paralyzing fear. Then some words of scripture came to my mind reminding me that God is light and is the source of all light. I realized that because I belong to God and God’s light is in me, I always carry that light even when I may not be able to physically see it. I went back to sleep that night, feeling comforted.

I have carried this lesson with me, and God is my constant light within. I am tempted to fear when I see the evil in the world, but scripture again reminds me that God’s light dwells in me. I can find peace in God’s light and shine it so that others can find peace when darkness seems to be closing in.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Thank you, Father, for the gift of light you have given us through your Son. Amen.
