Thought for the Day
A faith rooted in Christ can bear the weight of life’s afflictions.
[Trials] have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith . . . may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. – 1 Peter 1:7 (NIV)
The day my first child, Rex Isaiah, was born was also the day he passed away. He was born at 25 weeks gestation due to complications and spent three hours intubated in the NICU before going to be with the Lord. My husband and I wrestled with our new reality, reeling from shock and grief. For a while I surrendered to the lament in my soul and voiced my anguish to God. In the wake of Rex’s death, my husband and I plumbed the depths of our faith.
Loss tests us and gives rise to difficult questions. Why did God allow this to happen? Why didn’t God answer our prayers? How do we continue after our hope has been dashed?
The Christian walk is not for the fainthearted. Our understanding of God’s goodness cannot hinge upon answered prayers and joyful testimonies alone. We are called to a substantial faith where we invest our heart, mind, and soul. Our faith bears the weight of afflictions. Faith in Christ helps us to trust that the Lord is good and to persevere through the darkest hours. It provides an assurance of God’s promises — of a future we cannot see but one we can hold on to in hope.
Today’s Prayer
Dear Father, teach us to put our faith in you alone. As we endure suffering and loss, help us maintain our hope in you. Guide us as we persevere. Amen.
