THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
In times of trial, I will release my troubles to God.

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. – Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV)

“Let go and let God” is a phrase I have often heard Christians use to encourage someone to consciously surrender a situation to the will of God. One particular experience put this phrase into perspective for me.

As my sight began to diminish, I received mobility training with a white cane and a sighted guide. I learned firsthand how important it is to trust. One day after I had lost my sight completely, my son — who was not accustomed to being a sighted guide — eagerly offered to take me to church. With each step toward the church door, I found myself gripping his arm so tightly that my nails made marks on his skin. “Mom, Mom! You don’t have to hold me so tight! I’ve got you!” I immediately loosened my grip, and when I did, my anxiety disappeared. We laughed together and proceeded into the church.

I wonder why I held him so tightly. Did my fierce grip reveal a lack of confidence in him? Even though I know in my heart that my son loves me and would not let any harm come to me, my actions suggested otherwise. But when I loosened my grip, my son was able to guide me safely.

Where I had doubt in my son, there is no doubt with God. If we’re experiencing something new, we may become fearful and may even lose our faith. This is the time when, instead of clinging to our own ability, we should release the problem to God who will guide, direct, and deliver us.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, help us to trust you completely. Amen.

PRAYER FOCUS
