THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
My faith can help others to flourish.

It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him. – Deuteronomy 13:4 (NIV)

Years ago, I served as a counselor for middle school students exploring Catalina Island off the California coast. My responsibilities included monitoring students as they participated in ocean-related studies as well as chaperoning some snorkeling adventures. The Upper Room Devotional 19 July 2022

One of the amazing things about the waters surrounding the island is the abundance of brown kelp that grows tall and is in constant motion with the surge of waves. The seaweed is anchored to the ocean floor with special growths called holdfasts. By being the steady force that holds the kelp to the sea floor, holdfasts allow the kelp to stay rooted in storms and grow into forests that provide a place for other sea life to flourish.

In Hebrews 4:14, we are reminded that “since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess.” Like a kelp forest, our faith can serve as our holdfast, anchoring us in storms. And when we hold on to Christ, we can create an environment where everyone can prosper.

TODAY’S PRAYER
Heavenly Father, help us to hold fast to your truth so we can withstand the storms of life and help others to flourish. Amen.
