Thought for the Day
Today I will look for opportunities to serve God by serving those around me.
Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. – Psalm 37:4 (NIV)
I retired from teaching after more than 30 years, leaving a profession I loved. I wondered how I would fill my days, which had once been busy with lesson planning, correcting papers, and school activities. I prayed to God: Please use me to serve, Lord.
A few days later, I received a visit from a minister in our community. She explained that a local food outreach had closed. With all the food insecurity and poverty in our county and surrounding areas, this outreach was very much needed. The ministerial association had come up with a new idea for outreach — a mobile food pantry. I was asked to be a part of this ministry that would help bridge the hunger gap for those in rural areas. A month later, we held our first event and distributed free baskets of food.
The mobile food pantry, comprised entirely of volunteers, is now in its eleventh year, and I continue to serve as the chair. God truly does give us the desires of our heart when we delight in God.
Today’s Prayer
Thank you, Lord, for how you care for each of us. We are grateful for people and ministries that help feed those who are hungry. Amen.
