1 Corinthians 12:12-20

Each person has a part to play in serving God.

Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we . . . have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. – Romans 12:4-6 (NIV)

As I sat in church, my heart was touched by the sight and sound of the handbell choir. Golden bells, lined up from smallest to largest, sat upon linen-dressed tables. Behind the bells stood white-gloved choir members, poised to lift their bells on cue from their conductor. With precision, each bell pealed with clarity — echoing throughout the church. Together they rang the most beautiful music I had ever experienced. I felt that God must surely be pleased with this joyful noise made “unto the LORD” (Ps. 98:4, KJV).

It then occurred to me how much the handbell choir is like the church itself — the body of Christ (see Eph. 1:22-23). The apostle Paul compares the church to the human body and tells us that each member is as important as the others. All play an important role in strengthening and supporting the body of Christ to serve God. And just as the handbell choir needs its conductor to guide them to work in unity, so we need Jesus to guide us.

I now understand that however insignificant we feel our part to be, each role is of great importance to Christ. When we complement the work of others using the gifts given us, we make a joyful and pleasing noise unto our Lord!

Dear Lord, bless us as we serve your kingdom, and strengthen us in our efforts. Give us hearts to encourage one another as we remember that the efforts of all are equally important in your sight. Amen.
