TODAY’S READING

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
I can be God’s hands of help and healing for someone today.

SCRIPTURE: Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 2:4-5 (NRSV)

MESSAGE: The Upper Room Devotional 3rd March 2022

For 33 years I suffered from kidney stones and often required hospitalization for several days at a time. My doctors concluded the stones were caused by stress and suggested that I find ways to cope with my anxiety. That’s more easily said than done, I thought, as I considered my family, work, and volunteer commitments.

However, a combination of prayer, meditation, nutrition, and exercise have led to a healthy body. It’s now been 10 years since I had my last kidney stone. As I reflect on this experience, I realize that much of my growth has been spiritual. During each recovery I had to rely completely on medical personnel, family, and friends. As a result, I learned that God sends angels of mercy — the people who reflect God’s love by sending cards, making calls, preparing food, and praying. I have been richly blessed by these folks who seek to do good.

As today’s reading reminds us, we are called to care for one another with the love of Christ. Perhaps this means seeking out someone who is sick or deployed or undergoing medical treatments or putting the pieces together after a divorce. In God’s name, we are to actively love those who suffer.

TODAY’S PRAYER
God, our ultimate healer, thank you for calling us to serve as ministering angels of mercy to those in need. Give us the strength to love others with your love. Amen.

PRAYER FOCUS
Those with chronic illnesses
