THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Even when I feel unimportant, God declares that I am of great worth.
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. – Luke 12:6 (NIV)
My family is fascinated with birds, and we try to identify them whenever we are outside. One morning I saw an unusual and interesting bird. I didn’t have binoculars ready, so I tried listening for the bird’s song. Unfortunately I couldn’t make out its sound because many sparrows were singing at the same time.
I was disappointed as I headed home. I looked up one more time and saw a sparrow flying from roof to roof. I thought, It’s just a sparrow. I resented the fact that the sparrows had kept me from identifying the unusual bird. Sparrows are beautiful and sing melodiously, but because I see them all the time they are not exciting to me.
Suddenly, Luke 12:6 came to mind. Even the common sparrow is remembered by God and is under God’s sovereign care. Often we feel lonely, forgotten, or unimportant. But that doesn’t mean we are lost. We can celebrate sparrows, and ourselves, because the Lord knows us and sees us, no matter how insignificant we may consider ourselves to be. And this is the proof: Jesus died for us! Our sovereign God ultimately gives us identity and declares our worth. Just as God does for the sparrows, God always remembers and cares for us.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Sovereign God, we know you look lovingly upon all of your creation. Thank you that all your creatures are precious in your sight. Amen.
